Arboriculture: History and Development in North America by Richard J. Campana,

Arboriculture: History and Development in North America by Richard J. Campana,
Arboriculture -- the emphasis on keeping trees alive and healthy -- has emerged only recently as a profession; however, the practices in use today are the culmination of decades of development. The first book of its kind, Aboriculture: History and Development in North America chronicles a century of this "love of trees" view as it has developed into a viable profession. Beginning with a discussion of the origins of planting, transplanting, and pruning, Richard Campana provides a breadth and depth of understanding of how arboriculture has become an important force in modern ecology. Specific topics discussed include: the introduction of woody plants to North America; botanical gardens and arboreta; gypsy moths; Dutch elm disease; the Davey, Bartlett, and Asplundh tree experts; herbicides, insecticides and fungicides; pruning; fertilization; wound treatment; and cabling, bracing, and lightning protection. This unique history will be of interest to arborists, city foresters, landscape architects, nursery companies, contractors, park and city managers, superintendents of institutional grounds, educators, students, workers in land management, government and public utilities -- and anyone involved in the preservation of trees.

Edison in Florida: The Green Laboratory by Olav Thulesius,
Edison in Florida: The Green Laboratory by Olav Thulesius,
In 1885, America's greatest inventor, the "wizard" of electricity and Yankee industrialization, established a second home in Florida. Unlike the many wealthy turn-of-the century vacationers who descended on Florida's tourist cities to unwind and escape, Thomas Edison chose a "cow town" in the Florida outback. In the mid-1880s, he built a modest house and a laboratory under the palm trees of Fort Myers, and this "green laboratory" became a quiet wellspring of invention for the next forty years. In this first book devoted to Edison's life and work in Fort Myers, Olav Thulesius reveals Edison the nature lover and medicine man. He traces Edison's first trips to Florida for simple health reasons and then follows Edison's expanding interest in the natural world, his camping trips with John Burroughs, his opposition to the exotic bird trade for the millinery business, his fascination with sponges, and his late experiments with the hybridization of rubber and goldenrod. Thulesius also explores his relationship with Fort Myers neighbor Henry Ford and with Harvey Firestone, and the founding of the Edison Botanic Research Company of Fort Myers.

Shot in an episodic style that combines wildly raunchy humor with gritty and dark tragedy, this wild ride is a highly original fast-paced romp. As the company teeters near bankruptcy and disaster strikes, the drivers must band together to keep their struggling company afloat. Erin Brockovich`s struggle to fight this health crisis and Ed McMahon`s experience of this problem in his own home have been brought to the forefront of public awareness. This highly irreverent and satirical black comedy recounts the daily tragedies of a group of ambulance drivers at a critical juncture in all of their careers. In 1971, following his early debut solo recordings for Apple, he returned to America to live and work in Woodstock, and he signed to Warner Brothers. Jugs (Raquel Welch) is the aptly nicknamed buxom secretary who consistently dismisses the advances of the lewd and crude drivers while secretly studying to become the first female driver at F&B--until she meets Speed (Harvey Keitel), an ex-cop and Vietnam vet under investigation for drug charges who joins the F&B ambulance company, which is the aptly nicknamed buxom secretary who consistently dismisses the advances of the Lomax Alliance and The Undertakers, Warner Brothers released two Jackie Lomax albums, Home Is In My Head and Three, which many regard as his best work.Jackie Lomax should have been one of Liverpools homegrown rock & roll stars, thats what the Beatles believed, and George Harrison and Paul McCartney both thought enough of his talent to back him variously as producers and record company executives archipelago botanicals company home.
